START SOMA is an experiment.
Beginning with our first art show in a living room in San Francisco's SOMA district in 2003, our approach has always been a little bit different. ART FOR EVERYONE + ART FOR EVERYWHERE
Over the past 5 years, START SOMA has featured the work of hundreds of artists from around the world, and showcased several thousand original works of art - from murals, painting, sculpture, and photography to interactive installations, video art, and new media pieces.
Since our inception, START SOMA has been committed to a very simple vision:
And because we had absolutely NO IDEA what we were doing, it was pretty easy to be iconoclastic:
- we created an
ART HOTEL
- we opened an art gallery in Second Life
- we curated dozens of real-world art shows
- we just launched START MOVING PICTURES
- we created a unique artist in residence program
- we licensed featured artists' artwork around the world
- we created the PROPAGANDA III WORLD TOUR of polical posters
- we opened pop-up galleries in retail stores throughout North America
- we brought art exhibitions + murals to some of Silicon Valley's premier companies
- we launched START MOBILE to bring NEW ART to mobile phones globally
- we hosted art shows + charitable events that raised money for some great non-profits
- we are currently working on several new digital art initiatives that will launch shortly...
Some of our 'ART EXPERIMENTS' have worked out quite nicely. Others have failed beyond our wildest expectations.
